EMPOWERING THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

OUR STRUCTURE

We started Tavoos with the idea of using the “business” of yoga to better the lives of the less fortunate.  As we do not believe in profiting from yoga, we established Tavoos as a non-profit social venture.

Our structure is very unique, as non of our Canadian or Dutch founders and team members get paid from Tavoos.  We all volunteer our time and skills.  The only members of Tavoos who get paid are our Cambodian staff.  After we pay our staff and rent, all remaining funds go towards our three humanitarian initiatives.

GET INVOLVED

By taking part in our yoga teacher training courses (YTTC), you are directly making an impact to the local community.  When you join our YTTC, you will have the chance to physically visit our projects and take part.  During the course, we dedicate one day to taking you and your fellow classmates into the countryside to see the water well installed because of you attending our course.  You also will have the chance to meet the families who are enjoying access to clean water.

Furthermore, you can sign up to dedicate a few days after the course ends to help us dig water wells or take part in the incredible women’s hygiene education program which we support.

OUR INITIATIVES

WATER WELLS

Our water well initiative is called wedigwells.com.  Our mission is simple: To provide deep water wells and hygiene education to families in Cambodia.

From the funds generated from each Yoga Teacher Training Course, we dig and install clean water wells.  As well we receive donations from the general public for water wells to be installed in honor of someone’s name.

We have a long waiting list of less fortunate families in the outskirts of Siem Reap who desperately need access to clean water.

As soon as we are ready to dig a well, we visit one of the families on our list.  First we inspect the land to find the most suitable location for the well.  The well can not be near livestock or latrines.  Also it can not be on low grounds.  After our team inspects the location, we do a 60 meters deep test drill.  Once we reach water, we take a sample and test it for clarity, as well as bacteria and viruses.

Once the results come back in our favour, we dig and install the well.  This typically is a 3 day process.  We always hire local workers and purchase the supplies locally in order to support the community economically as well.

Once the well has been installed, we do another water test and then the families can start enjoying the gift of clean water.  We always provide free maintenance and follow up with families to ensure that there are no problems with the well, pump or quality of water.

Cost of a water well is only $500.  To give you a breakdown of how the funds are spent:

  • Labour & parts = $360
  • Food & transport for workers = $30
  • Water testing = $100
  • Signage = $10
  • Photos & GPS marking = $0
  • Maintenance = $0
  • Hygiene education = $0

WOMEN'S HYGIENE

We are a big supporter of Days for Girls.  An organisation dedicated to distributing sanitary pads and hygiene kits to girls and women in rural areas.  As well as providing hygiene education.

After each of our YTT course, our students are able to stay for a few extra days if they wish to volunteer for this amazing cause.

As this program deals directly with teenage girls, volunteers will be required to provide a police background check.  Furthermore, in order to respect the beneficiaries’ culture and personal comfort, field work and interaction with beneficiaries is open to female volunteers only.  Male volunteers may provide other forms of support such as preparing hygiene kits, logistical support, research, marketing and fundraising.

YOGA SCHOLARSHIP

We are all privileged to be able to travel to exotic locations such as Cambodia in order to study yoga.  However, for almost all of the locals this is impossible to do.

Since Cambodians are welcoming us into their country to practice and study yoga, it is only our duty to share this beautiful gift with them.

During each of our yoga teacher training courses, we make one spot available for an aspiring Cambodian yoga teacher who wants to receive a Yoga Alliance certificate.  Once they graduate, we also offer them a paid position at Tavoos.
